Here are the steps to obtaining a student visa to the United States

If you want to study in the United States and are not a US citizen, you must obtain a student visa. Applying for a student visa in the United States may be a long process, so make sure you are well and early - at least three or five months before starting the first step. There are usually several steps to applying for a student visa. These steps vary with each embassy or consulate so it is important to check the instructions on the website of the embassy or consulate where you want to submit your application.

In general, prospective students pass five stages when applying for a student visa in the United States:

    1. Send the application and receive acceptance by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program The student will apply for a student visa, the consulate where you would like to apply. (SEVP) - a school approved in the United States (six to twelve months before study in America).

    2. Payment of Student Information System and Exchange Visitor Information System

    3. Complete the student visa application in the United States in addition to recent personal photos.

    4. Pay the visa application fee

    5. Set an appointment and attend an interview for the visa.

Read below for more details on the five steps

    1. Apply for registration at an accredited institute by SEVP

As an international student, you must make sure you choose an academic institution and a program approved by the SEVP Student Exchange Program for the US Government.

Certification is important because it confirms recognition by other universities, professional associations, employers and government ministries around the world. Only SEVP recognized academic institutions can enroll students in the student information system and exchange visitors and provide you with the necessary documentation to apply for a student visa in the United States. Use a government site to study in the states to identify accredited institutions.

Unlike some countries, the United States does not have a centralized system for applying to the university, so it will have to apply to each academic institution that is interested in it separately. You must fill in the admission requirements for each institution, and you will often be asked to provide proof that you have sufficient financial resources.

You will be admitted to the SEVIS system and a document will be sent by the SEVIS called Form I-20 if you are eligible for an F or M visa or a DS-2019 form if you are eligible for a J visa .

The SEVP administers international students in F and M visa categories, while the Department of State (DOS) administers international visitor and student exchange programs on J. visa classifications. SEVP and the State Department use SEVIS to track and monitor academic institutions, exchange programs and international students.

    2. Pay the SEVIS fee

You must pay the SEVIS fee at least three days prior to applying for a US visa. In order to pay the fees, you must send a form either online or on paper. Both can be accessed through the US Immigration and Customs Portal (SEVP). Be sure to enter exactly the required details as shown on Form I-20 or DS-2019.

During the time of writing, the I-901 fee is US $ 200 for M / F visa holders and $ 180 for student visa holders J. J visa holders and camp counselors, home workers or summer work / travel; they pay $ 35 instead. The website explains procedures for different types of payment including credit or credit card, check, international money order or fast payment via Western Union. After paying the fees you can return to the site to inspect your payment status if desired. A third party (such as your supervisor) can also pay for you. If the fees are paid on your behalf you must receive a receipt from the third party itself.

You can also get and print out the payment confirmation from the website at any time after completing your payment. You will need this certification as proof that you have paid the fees in your interview to obtain a student visa in the United States. You may also need to show certification to the customs officer at the port of entry to the United States of your choice if you change your status as a non-immigrant, or if you apply for any other immigrant benefits in the United States.

    3. Completing the student visa application form in the United States

Once you have received your SEVIS form and have paid its fees, you can schedule an appointment with the US Consulate or Embassy in your country to apply for a student visa in the United States. It is best to apply as soon as possible, regardless of when the program is scheduled to begin. Visa processing times may vary, and the visa can be issued approximately 120 days before you can enter the United States.

Most countries have a website dedicated to obtaining a student visa in the United States, accessible from the home page. If you can not find your country in the list, you can still find the US embassy or consulate in your country using the US Embassy website.

    Online Visa Application: DS-160

In all cases, you will need to complete the DS-160 online visa application form. You should also specify where you wish to apply and ensure that you have all the documentation and information you need to fill out the application. After you choose and answer the security question, you will be taken to the form pages. At the top, you'll find your app ID.
